Have you ever wondered how we keep our content fresh and engaging year after year?

We’re fortunate to have a team of brilliant Program Partners who are expert in their design specialties—and super well connected.

In Part One of our four-part series “Behind the Scenes with the HOW Design Live Program Partners,” we featured designer, author, educator and brand strategist Debbie Millman. Debbie is also the host of the award-winning podcast Design Matters, chair of the world’s first Masters in Branding Program at the School of Visual Arts, editorial and creative director of PRINT Magazine and president emeritus of AIGA. She is the author of six books on design and branding.

In Part Two we talk to Andrew Gibbs who reveals some details about the 2017 conference program, what HOW Design Live means to him, and more. Andrew is Founder, CEO and Editor-in-Chief of the Dieline, Dieline Conference and Dieline Awards. Check back for future interviews with Ilise Benun (Part Three) and Zachary Petit (Part Four).

Q: Why did you agree to be a Program Partner?

Andrew Gibbs: I originally became a part of HOW Design Live after The Dieline and HOW partnered to launch The Dieline Conference, a dedicated event for designers of packaging and consumer brands. The Dieline itself originally began as a way to show designers and marketers the immense value that lies in well-designed brand packaging, and its importance in the overall success of a product. As our industry has embraced this ethos—and packaging’s importance and relevance has elevated—The Dieline’s programming has now become an integral and essential part of HOW Design Live. I believe that designers today who embrace the ever growing role that packaging plays in the marketing mix, and the growing role that design plays in the ultimate success of a product, will be the most prepared to see their brands, their clients, and themselves succeed.

What does How Design Live mean to you?

Andrew Gibbs: HOW Design Live is not just another event. HOW Design Live, to me, is many things. It is a connector. It is a hub. It is a continuing conversation. It is both an old trusted friend who helps guide you, as well as a new friend who helps you see beyond yourself. Beyond what you ever thought capable. It represents the vibrancy of the practitioners of our industry, and the passion of its leaders to pass on the torch. It is a community of knowledge, support, connection and trust. It’s an experience that you can’t quite put into words, but something I always want to be a part of.

Why did you select certain speakers for this year’s program?

Andrew Gibbs: For this year’s program, we wanted to focus on the challenges that today’s designers face, and the opportunities that lie within. We chose a line-up of speakers from major brands and agencies who aren’t afraid to be honest about the myriad of challenges that they have faced in their careers, and the path they took to overcome them.

What highlights of the 2017 program are you most excited about?

Andrew Gibbs: For 2017, I am most excited for the sheer variety of different session types we have. We have everything from major keynotes from industry giants, 15-minute idea-driven Spark sessions, curated panel discussions and Play activities, to hands-on Workshops and Master Classes. It’s sure to be the most hands-on HOW Design Live yet.

What are the benefits of attending HOW Design Live every year?

Andrew Gibbs: For me, the most important benefit to attending HOW Design Live is connection. Attending HOW Design Live helps me to make new connections to other like-minded designers and creatives every year, but also helps to keep me connected to the leaders in our industry. It helps to keep me connected to the topics and challenges that our industry is facing, and keeps me connected to the solutions that will push our industry forward.
